KUNDUZ CITY (SW): Hundreds of people in northern Kunduz province blocked highway leading to Takhar as they held a protest demonstration against the death of a militia commander in police custody.

Qudos Chapa, a local militia commander was imprisoned 3 months ago and was supposed to be freed before his death under suspicious circumstances in police custody on Wednesday.

Lal Muhammad, a supporter of Qudos Chapa, has said that they blocked the highway in a bid to show their resentment and anger. “He was alive till Tuesday night, but on Wednesday morning at around eight in the morning we were informed that he has been shot dead”, Lal added.

Muhammad Naim Nasiri, a local community leader has also cast doubts over Chapa’s sudden death. Safiullah Amiri, member of the provincial council, has vowed to bring the dead body to Kabul for medical examination.

Local officials in the province however, claim that Qudos Chapa died of heart attack. Syed Mahmud Danish, the spokesperson for the provincial governor has assured that if this is proven that Chapa did not die of natural cause, police would nab the perpetrators of Chapa’s death. He added that the Kunduz-Takhar highway has been opened for traffic.

Qudos Chapa, a local anti-Taliban militia leader was arrested three months ago.
