10/12/2018

KANDAHAR CITY (SW) – Following the assassination of Gen. Abdul Raziq, many feared Kandahar would plunge back into chaos and violence.

The late police chief for the province was killed along with the provincial head of the spy agency, NDS, by a Taliban infiltrator inside the governor’s compound some two months ago.

However, Mohammad Usman Kakar, a legal affairs expert, believes Gen. Raziq had tasked capable individuals at key positions during his life to keep the security of the province under control. He said the slain police chief’s discipline operations and formation of professional teams have discarded fears about security deteriorating when he is no more.

He also hailed the efforts of the new police chief, Gen. Tadeen Khan, brother of Raziq, in keeping the situation under control.

A number of Kandahar resident acknowledged that the law and order situation in the province did not change following the assassination of Gen. Raziq. Many were fearful things would get out of control, but that did not happen.

Mohammad Umer Sateh, secretary at the High Peace Council in Kandahar, said the province has special importance that is why different forces including the police, NDS, army, the NATO forces and even the common people have joined hands to further improve the state of security here.

Spokesman for the police headquarters in the province, Zia Durrani, said the late police chief had established a comprehensive security team. He added the new police chief, Gen. Tadeen Khan, also has the backing of the people.

This comes as the new police chief has launched operation against outlaws in the province, a move hailed by the Kandahar residents.
