KHOST CITY (SW): Up to 219 schools have closed down in Khost province as teachers have initiated a strike against the government’s inaction in granting them residential plots.
Schools in the provincial capital Khost city as well as in Zazai Maidan, Ali Sher, Bat and Sabari districts are affected by this strike. Hassan, director of a high-school in Ali Sher district, told Salam Watandar that the strike would go on until the government assures the teachers of residential plots. He said teachers like him have been serving for decades, but the government has not provided them with homes.
Some 3449 teachers in these four districts are said to be taking part in this strike.
Mohammad Akbar, director education at the provincial directorate of education, said in this regard the concerned departments are not helping them stop such problems from arising. Mohammad Mubarez, spokesman for the provincial government, has said there are some administrative problems in plots allotted to teachers previously, and as soon as those issues are resolved more teachers would be granted with residential plots.
Safe estimates suggest up to 183 thousand students are enrolled in schools that are closed due to this strike.
