KABUL (SW) – Hundreds of small and automatic arms and large cache of ammunition confiscated in Nangarhar province were handed over to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) on Thursday.
Officials said on the occasion these arms and ammunitions have been confiscated from different insurgent groups and criminals across the province.
Shah Mehmood Miyakhail, provincial governor, said in this stock include arms that were previously stolen from security forces, but later confiscated from the insurgents. He said a number of armed insurgents have also been arrested along with these arms.
Regional head of DIAG, Brig. Ghulam Hassan Sahebzada, said during the past one year close to two thousand arms have been confiscated. He said a number of outlawed groups and individuals in this part of the country continue to illegally possess arms.
DIAG is part of Afghanistan’s New Beginnings Programme which was established in 2003 to assist the Government of Afghanistan with the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of soldiers and former fighters.
