CHAGHCHIRAN (SW): The Taliban militants as well as the government forces have inflicted serious damage upon a number of historical monuments in Ghor province which was once the seat of the Ghurid dynasty.
Residents and provincial directorate of information and culture have said the historical monuments in the province are on the verge destruction as not only the Taliban insurgents, but security forces are also using these historical sites as their outposts.
Fakhrudin Aryapur, head of provincial information and culture directorate, told Salam Watandar historical monuments and archaeological sites are exposed to all sorts of threats. “Aside from the Taliban, government forces are also erecting their military outposts on these site”, added Aryapur. According to Aryapur, the provincial information and culture directorate has raised these concerns on several occasions, and has notified the provincial administration and security entities, but to no avail.
Meanwhile, Zia-u-Din Saqib, provincial chief of the Afghan National Police (ANP), rejecting the claims made by the directorate of information and culture, said there are no security outposts near these historical sites. “Police has the duty of protecting these historical sites and monuments”, added Saqib.
