Helmandis see fact-finding missions useless for peace

18/01/2016

LASHKARGAH (SW): Members of Helmand Provincial Council and the local civil society activists believe delegations sent to probe security situation here have done nothing but wasted time and resources.

A re-surge of militancy in this restive part of the country compelled the Kabul government to send a number of the missions to Helmand to assess the on-ground situation.

Abdul Hameed Akhundzada, deputy speaker of the provincial council however, argued that members of these missions never did their job. He noted that the security situation has worsened in the past six months but since the local leadership was not consulted for the formation of fact finding commissions, no positive impacts have emerged.

Bashir Ahmad Shakir, head of the provincial council’s committee on security affairs, said in this regard that the delegations sent to the province to assess situation caused further confusion instead of drawing a clear picture of the affairs.

It was asserted that since the provincial council was very much active, there was no need to send additional delegations to probe and comment on the security affairs. The local civil society has expressed similar views on the matter.

Sardar Mohammad Hamdard, head of the Helmand Civil Society stressed that the province needed practical measures for peace than empty promises for peace. He charged that these missions have only benefited the members of the mission in terms of pay and perk but lead to no change in the state of security affairs in Helmand.

Salam Watandar tried to contact some members of these missions to have their views on the matter but to no avail.
