KANDAHAR (SW) – After a spell of crippling drought, heavy snow and torrential rain across Afghanistan claimed at least 16 lives, officials confirmed on Saturday.
Dr. Jawed Ahmad, head of the public hospital in Kandahar’s Spin Boldak district, informed Salam Watandar seven dead bodies and eight injured people have been brought here. Spokesman for the Kandahar Municipality, Zmaray Sargand, has said at least 50 homes are destroyed due to the floods.
Similar reports of destruction have emerged from other parts of the country as well. Five people are reported killed from Helmand, and two each from Herat and Nuristan provinces.
Deputy governor of Farah, Mosa Nazar, informed SW the floods have caused phenomenal damage in Farah city and Anar Dara village. He said literally all parts of the province are engulfed with floodwater.
Members of the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces have been deployed to a number of critical areas to provide rescue and relief operations.
