KABUL (SW) – Members of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Wednesday engaged in heated debate over the Bilateral Security Agreement with the U.S.
In today’s session, some members of the house pronounced the BSA beneficial for national interests while others called for review of the agreement. Kamal Safi, a member of the house, stressed the members should not criticize the BSA in reckless way just for political gains. He added the U.S. is the main ally of Afghanistan in the international arena, and the BSA is in favour of Afghanistan.
However, Homayoun Homayoun, deputy speaker of the house, asserted that the house called for review of the agreement last week, not termination of it all together. He said those criticizing the agreement in the previous session are now defending it.
Shekiba Hashemi, another member of the house, insisted on review of the agreement, and claimed, the U.S. had promised to provide Afghanistan high-tech arms, but such promises have not been kept.
