KABUL (SW): The second vice president, Sarwar Danish said that government will finalize reviewing the cases of violence against journalists in two months.
Speaking on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day at a news conference in Kabul, the second vice president informed that over the past 6 months, hundreds of cases of violence against journalists and the media activities in the past 10 years have been thoroughly reviewed and in two months all the cases will be finalized.
The second vice president said Afghanistan’s National Journalists Union (ANJU) has played a key role in organizing, categorizing, and following up on these cases.
Meanwhile, the Joint Committee on Security and Immunity of Journalist (JCSIJ) which aims to provide journalists with security and immunity has also played an active role in this matter, Sarwar Danish added. The committee was formed about a year ago by the media, ANJU, and the Ministry of Information and Culture, and other security, justice and law enforcement agencies.
The second vice president said the committee along with the fact that it has been reviewing cases of journalists and the media for the past 10 years, has done a lot of work to establish a trust between the government and the media to investigate and pursue cases of abuse and violence against journalists in different provinces.
According to a new report by the Reporters without Borders, Afghanistan has ranked 118th in the World Media Freedom Classification.
According to this report, the challenges of media freedom in other countries, on the one hand, and the progress of Afghanistan in the area of freedom of information, on the other hand, have been the most important factors for improvement in the rankings of Afghanistan from 120th place in previous year to 118th in 2018.
