KABUL (SW) – The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Saturday charged the Taliban rebels for trying to gain mileage for the Moscow peace talks by staging deadly assaults on Ghazni and Uruzgan provinces.
Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, speaker of the house, said the rebels intensified assaults on Maalistan and Jaghori in Ghazni, Khas Uruzgan in Uruzgan province and in a number of northern provinces for the sake of gaining upper hand in Moscow peace talks. Urging the NATO forces to provide necessary support to the Afghan forces, he said the rebels have obtained heavy arms for such attacks.
Criticizing the government for failing to ensure safety of the citizens, Ibrahimi said this had led to widening gap and lack of trust among masses towards the security institutions.
A number of MPs also criticized the government for failing to take actions against the advancing rebels. They demanded aerial operations against the Taliban.
Ahmad Behzaad and Abdul Qayom Sajjadi, two such members, said a human catastrophe would emerge in the two districts attacked by the rebels. They said thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes due to fighting in Ghazni and Uruzgan provinces.
Following the Taliban’s attack on Jaghori district, the rebels also assaulted Maalistan district of Ghazni province. A number of Kabul residents staged a protest demonstration in front of the parliament against these atrocities, and urged the government to take effective measures to ensure safety of the civilains.
