KANDAHAR CITY (SW): Hundreds of elders from various provinces gathered in Kandahar on Sunday to call upon the Taliban and the Afghan government to reach a peace deal.

Government officials, religious and tribal leaders, people’s representatives and youth from Kandahar, Kabul, Herat, Paktia, Ghor, Badghis, Uruzgan, Zabul and Helmand participated in this gathering for peace.

The participants called upon the Afghan government and the Taliban to make real efforts for the peace process, and to unite for the progress of the country.

General Abdul Razaq, Kandar Police Chief expressed that peace is our peoples’ top priority, we should no longer depend on brokerage of peace deals, and we should act as people to bring peace. The police chief said that the Afghan Taliban should be provided with opportunity to live with peace in the country.

Speakers also lamented elements in the government that are merely striving for more and more power and perks. Representatives gave their views and a resolution was adopted calling for peace talks and end war and suffering.

An executive committee will be formed consisting of two representatives from each province for the peace talks as an aim for the gathering.
