KABUL (SW) – An agreement equaling to $ three million for food aid to Afghanistan was signed here on Sunday between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and the government of Denmark.
This fund would be used to provide urgent food relief to thousands of families in the drought-affected Herat, Ghor, Badghes, Helmand, Kandahar and Daikundi provinces of Afghanistan.
Nicholaj Hejber, Ambassador of Denmark to Afghanistan, said on the occasion his country is committed to help Afghanistan with food security, strengthening of the livestock and agriculture sectors.
Rajendra Aryal, FAO Representative in Afghanistan, said on his term the funds provided by Denmark would be used to distribute animal feed and improved seeds and medicine in the drought-hit areas of the country.
Head of the livestock department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, feared this fund is not enough to mitigate the losses sustained by the Afghans due to the crippling drought.
The project would be implemented through the MAIL. Though, the MAIL officials did not provide figures on animals lost to drought, but FAO officials said 47 per cent livestock owners have sustained serious negative impacts of the drought.
