KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has vowed to fulfill the legacy of former Prime Minister Musa Shafique in safeguarding the national interests.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) commemorated late Shafique in an international seminar here on Tuesday. In the first session of this seminar, President Ghani praised Shafiq as a genuine leader who was politically and socially aware, and keen on safeguarding the national interests. Ghani said Shafique was born in a rural family, but his hard work and knowledge paid off when he became the prime minister of the country.

Musa Shafique graduated from Al-Azhar University of Cairo, and also completed his higher education at the Columbia University in the U.S. Later, Shafiq studied administrative law in Sweden and Napoleon Code (civil law) in France.

Musa Shafiq is well known for his efforts in reaching a treaty with Iran on the Helmand River, which resonates as his biggest political achievement for Afghanistan. President Ghani said in his remarks he would pursue this legacy by ensuring the water resources of Afghanistan are secured.

Salahudin Rabani, acting foreign minister, said on the occasion the aim of this seminar is to highlight the achievements of the late Musa Shafique, and draw lessons from that.

Musa Shafique was killed during the Communist regime in the 1979. Only few of his writings have survived.
