Ghani tactically justifies re-engagement with Pakistan

10/12/2015

KABUL: (SW):  Elaborating the dimensions of trust building between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said that in modern day geopolitics, ties with nations are defined by interests rather than just the trust.

Ghani told this to a press conference here on Friday as he spoke about the gains of recently held Heat of Asia-Istanbul Process HAIP Conference in Islamabad. About the notion of having eternal confidence in any regional country, particularly Pakistan, the President said such approach was not the way forward. He stressed that the Government of National Unity has adopted a balanced approach in this regard.

The President noted that Pakistan has promised to respect the state and the Constitution of Afghanistan and has promised to take serious measures against those undermining the state and the Constitution, and not joining the peace process.

Ghani said, during the HAPI Conference in Islamabad, Pakistan was urged to take serious measures against the Haqqani network, and take serious steps for peace in Afghanistan. In a multilateral meeting during the HAIP Conference that was also attended by representatives of Afghanistan, China and the U.S., Pakistan promised to work for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned political process that promotes a dialogue between the Afghan Government and Taliban groups, including on reduction and renunciation of violence.

Commenting about terrorism in Afghanistan, Ghani said it was a three-dimensional phenomenon, one aspect of it was the regional terrorist groups, second one the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban and the third one was an unannounced war against Afghanistan. Ghani made it clear that during the peace process, no compromise would be made on the Constitution.
