KABUL (SW): Asking that the Ulema (religious scholars) to mobilize people for ‘fateful Jihad against corruption’, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said the government is fully committed rooting out corruption.
The President said this as he met religious scholars from various parts of the country at his office on Tuesday. Ghani said the cost of corruption was born above all by the three main majorities of the country- the women, the youth and the poor.
“We have to do two things, first to clean the mess left by the previous government and second if people ever witness any corruption in awarding contracts they should let the government know about it.” the President said. He added that monitoring of the procurement projects has saved around afn 8.5 million so far.
Shortcomings in the system of operation of customs have contributed to spread of corruption and smuggling, Ghani said, adding the government has decided to bring reforms in the customs, create customs police and establish a customs academy.
He mentioned political influence and interference by the powerful ws the principle reason for corruption in the customs.
