KABUL (SW) – The first ever Girls’ Hygiene Guidelines in Afghanistan was launched here on Tuesday by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the UNICEF.
Speaking on the occasion, Mirwais Balkhi, interim-minister for the MoE, said the menstruation or monthly periods among girls is a natural phenomenon, and it should not be treated as a matter of shame. He said the guidelines are in line with the cultural norms, and have been prepared in close collaboration with the students, teachers and their families. He hoped it would prove helpful.
First Lady, Rula Ghani, said on her term spreading awareness about menstruation is the responsibility of every citizen. She said the guidelines have a particular focus on the role of family members and teachers in this regard.
Ensuring provision of required facilities in girls’ schools and providing training to female teachers in regard to menstruation along with other measures of awareness are considered part of academic syllabus by the MoE in the coming ten years.
