SAR-E-PUL (SW) – The raging violence in Sar-e-Pul province’s Sancharak district has forced thousands of families to flee their homes.
Naqibullah Daqiq, governor of the district, told Salam Watandar these Internally Displaced Persons are living under dire conditions in the provincial capital. He claimed up to 1000 heavily armed Taliban fighters have secured positions in different parts of the district in a bid to attack the provincial capital. Daqiq said at least 200 members of the Afghan Local Police are under the siege of the Taliban in the Masjid Sabz area of the district.
The district governor said the rebels have placed mines in the Kajwa area, and have torched an ALP check post.
Assadullah Khurum, member of the provincial council, said the security operation here yield no results, but caused damaged to the civilian population. He warned if the government paid no attention to the state of security in Sancharak six thousands families would be killed by the Taliban.
A number of these IDPS on Monday staged a protest demonstration. They warned to keep the main roads in Sar-e-Pul city closed until the government conducts operation to clear Sancharak of the presence of the rebels.
Spokesman of the provincial governor, Zabihullah Amani, has acknowledged the growing threats in Sancharak. He added basic relief goods have been distributed among the IDPs. Underlining the need for additional troops, he said up to 200 ALP men are resisting the advancement of the Taliban in Sancharak. He vowed soon the 209 – Shaheen Crops would deploy Special Forces to Sancharak.
