Experts: Russia supporting resistance council in the north

12/02/2016

KABUL (SW): A number of political experts said that Ahmad Zia Massoud, the Special Presidential Envoy for Reforms and Good Governance, seeks to establish a northern resistance council backed and supported by Russia.

Massoud, who has been touring northern provinces for the past couple of days now, in his meetings with a number of former Jihadi commanders, has urged upon them to fight the Taliban under the name of Mujaheddin Resistance Council within the structure of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).

Addressing former Jihadi commanders in the north and northeastern provinces, he has charged that the government has no will and determination for fighting the terrorism. Zia Massoud went on to say that if they waited for the outcome of proposed peace talks with the Taliban, they will only be deceived.

Therefore, he said they should be prepared to defend their country.

The Presidential Envoy has also said to the commanders that the Taliban seek to conduct wide spring offensives next year to capture northern provinces and the security forces cannot resist them. A number of military and political affairs’ analysts however, believe that Russia aims to support Jihadi commanders in a bid to stop the influence of Daesh towards Central Asia and by doing so, Afghanistan would be divided between north and south.

Mohammad Ishaq Atmar, a political expert, told Salam Watandar that Russia seeks to establish a protective zone, which would have a negative impact on Afghanistan in the future. Atiqullah Amarkheyl, a military analyst, said that Russia has granted funds and equipment to the Jihadi commanders.

Zahir Sadat, a parliamentarian however, did not agree with the notion about cooperation between Russia and Ahmad Zia Massoud.

He said that Massoud only wanted to make people understand that the security forces are not capable of fighting the enemy alone and that the people should also do their best to ensure their own security.
