Encroaching state land with ‘fabricated’ graveyards

29/10/2016

HERAT CITY (SW): The Herat Municipality claimed to have unearthed a number of fraudulent schemes aimed at encroaching state land with the help of ‘fabricated’ graveyards.

Ghulam Ghause Nekbeen, deputy director at the Herat Municipality, told Salam Watandar that a number of land-grabbers have encroached upon state property, built ‘fake graveyards’ overnight on it and then erected a boundary wall around it. Nekbeen added that a number of these ‘fake graveyards’ built by land grabbers around the Shrine of Khwaja Abdullah Ansari have been demolished. He added that a number of land grabbers have also established mosques on public properties that could not be demolished.

As per his information, the Herat Municipality, despite all odds, threats and physical abuse, have managed to reclaim thousands of acres of public land from the land grabbers.

Jailani Farhad, spokesman for the provincial governor, said in this regard that a number of government employees involved in this illegal activity have also been arrested. In a bid to stop people from encroaching public properties for graveyards, the Herat Municipality has dedicated two areas in the north and south of the city for the very purpose.
