KABUL (SW): Miagul Wasiq, the head of the political, social, and cultural relations at the Office of the President Department of Public Affairs, said that in the first days of the government, President Ghani’s priority was the promotion of education in the country, however, with the ongoing war in the country that has changed now.
According to Wasiq, increasing insecurity has led government’s attention away from the education sector, and currently, more than 300 million students and school-eligible children have been left out of education across the country due to increasing insecurity.
Meanwhile, Sardar Mohammad Rahimi, deputy minister of Education said that in the past 10 years, the budget for education has dropped by 5.5 percent.
According to Rahimi, the reason for budget cuts is the ongoing war in the country, as a large part of the national budget is allocated to security agencies.
Rahimi added that despite the budget cuts, 9 million children are currently enrolled in schools across the country.
According to Ministry of Education, there are 17,430 active schools across the country, of which only about 9000 schools have buildings.
Although the government named 2018 a year of National Education in Afghanistan, many students still study under the tents in most of the provinces.
