KABUL (SW) – The Election Watch Organization of Afghanistan called for postponing the forthcoming presidential polls on Saturday.
Habibullah Shinwari, head of the EWO governing body, told a press conference in this connection that the delay in holding the presidential polls is pivotal to ensure transparency. He said the electoral commission officials have just taken charge, and need time to get in flow with their work. Shinwari suggested delaying the forthcoming polls by one to two months.
In the meantime, Aziz Rafey, head of the Afghanistan Civil Society Organizations, stressed the new electoral commissioners should be given time to bring fundamental reforms for the sake of fair and transparent polls in the country.
Via a statement issued today, the EWO and ACSO urged the electoral commission to announce the remaining results of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) elections held in October last year. It also urged the government and the presidential candidates to maintain impartiality and avoid interfering in the affairs of the electoral commissions.
