Delay in approval of draft budget causes concerns

30/12/2018

KABUL (SW) – The Ministry of Finance has expressed concerns over delay in approval of budget by the Wolesi Jirga (lower house).

Shamroz Khan Masjidi, spokesman for the MoF, told Salam Watandar draft of the fiscal budget 2019-20 was sent to the WJ last month, but the house hasn’t approved it yet. He said the MoF has addressed and responded to all the queries and concerns of the parliamentarians, but the MPs continue to have debate over it among them.

He warned if the MPs failed to approve the draft in time, the government would be faced with impediments.

In the meantime, Kamal Safi, member of the WJ commission on budget and financial affairs, said the draft would be presented in the house on Monday after thorough consultation with the concerned departments for the past three weeks. He expressed optimism that the draft would be approved on Monday.

The draft budget for 2019-20 is worth an estimated AFN 257 billion with AFN 124 billion for expenditures and AFN 133 billion for development projects.
