KABUL (SW) – There are serious deficiencies at the parliament making it highly vulnerable to corruption, the Independent join Anti-Corruption Monitoring and Evaluation Committee said on Sunday.
The MEC officials said this at the launch of Vulnerability to Corruption Assessment of the Afghan National Assembly analysis report, which was focused at legal and institutional frameworks, institutional ethos, and capabilities.
Maiwand Rehmani, chairman MEC, said on the occasion that the MPs have even engaged in corruption in connection with the drive of summoning ministers. He added there were no documents presented by many MPs for their inflated expenditures while other members of the house even engaged in lobbying for personal purposes.
Commenting on the 16th batch of the parliament, he said some ministers managed to serve as interim exploiting the weak monitoring by the MPs. He added some parliamentarians obtained official vehicle permits for their friends and relatives by misusing their power and authority.
Rustam Paiman, legal adviser at the MEC, said on the occasion that a set of 24 recommendations have been presented in the study for reforms in the parliament. One of the recommendation is about additional funds for the MPs to entertain their guests.
