KABUL (SW): A deadly kitchen gas-cylinder explosion in Kabul claimed the lives of five family members of a local civil society activist on Tuesday morning.
This horrific incident has once against highlighted endemic hazards associated with the use of kitchen gas cylinders. Similar incidents in the past made authorities promise to regulate the sale and use of kitchen cylinders that are often expired but re-painted and re-sold as new under fake labels.
Local civil society activist Mahmood Saeed became latest victim of the perilous practice. The man lost his wife, three young daughters and a young boy as kitchen gas-cylinder exploded while his wife was preparing meal.
In most urban parts of the country, people buy Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for domestic purposes that is stored and transported in cylinders of various sizes. It is advised that these cylinders must be regularly inspected, changed if needed and placed outside the house/buildings in a weather and child proof/protected area/enclosure.
It is best safe practice to place these cylinders outside a confined space like a kitchen and utilise them using a gas pipe/hose.
