KABUL (SW): The Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Saturday announced it plans to double the Commando Forces amid escalating violence across the country.

Maj. Gen. Dawlat Waziri, Spokesperson for MoD, told reporters in Kabul that the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) and Afghan Border Police (ABP) will be merged with the MoD, and the Afghan National Army Commandoes Forces will be doubled and upgraded to a Corp level. The MoD has appreciated NATO’s continued support. “NATO’s commitment to continue its support to Afghanistan and our security forces is very important to implementing MoD’s four years security roadmap.” Gen. Waziri said.

On Thursday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted three areas of focus in Afghanistan that also included strengthening the Special Forces. “We have seen that the Special Operations Forces in Afghanistan have been very professional and very important in the fight against the Taliban and we are now working on how we can further strengthen the Special Operations Forces of the Afghan Army”, he said at NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting in Brussels.

Stoltenberg emphasized that sufficient number of troops are essential to continue to support the Afghans, to break the stalemate and make advances on the battlefield which will then pave the ground for a political solution.
