
KABUL (SW) – The top US commander in Afghanistan, Gen Austin Scott Miller, and local Afghan officials came under armed assault in southern Kandahar province on Saturday.
Aziz Ahmad Aziz, spokesman for the provincial governor, told Salam Watandar unknown attackers shot fires after a security meeting in Kandahar city.
According to credible security sources, Gen. Abdul Raziq, the provincial police chief, got killed in the attack.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.
Col. Knut Peters, a Resolute Support spokesman, has said initial reports indicate this was an Afghan-on-Afghan incident. "Two Americans were wounded in the cross-fire and they have been medically evacuated. General Miller is uninjured. We are being told the area is secure. Initial reports also say the attacker is dead".
