‘Closure of IEC offices does not help with transparency’

17/09/2018

KABUL (SW) – Abdullah Abdullah, chief executive officer, on Monday criticized the closing down of the electoral commission’s offices in three provinces by the Grand National Alliance of parties.

Chairing a session of the council of ministers, Abdullah said this move does not help with ensuring transparency in the polls. He added steps have been taken towards biometric verification of voters, and if political parties cooperate with the government, the matters can be discussed with the electoral commission.

This comes amid closure of the Independent Election Commission offices in three provinces over charges of alleged pre-poll rigging.

Also on Monday, electoral watchdog expressed concerns over closure of the IEC offices, fearing it might hinder the timely execution of the forthcoming parliamentary elections. The watchdog criticized the IEC for not responding to queries in regard to the process. It also urged the UN to devise a mechanism towards resolving the impasse.
