KABUL (SW) – Figures from Civilian Protection Advocacy Group (CPAG) revealed on Sunday that the civilian casualties surged in 23 provinces of the country during the holy month of Ramadan.
Civilian fatalities increased by almost double in May, the month which mostly corresponds with the holy month of Ramadan 2019, compared to the figures in March, the CPAG figures showed. It said 529 civilians have been killed or injured in May which is double compared to civilian fatalities in March.
The organization’s statistics show 189 innocent people have been killed and 340 others injured with most of the casualties registered in Kabul, Nangarhar, Herat, Ghazni and Helmand provinces.
Children suffered huge casualties as 33 of them were killed and 34 others injured in May while 13 women were killed and 9 others injured.
Most of casualty’s civilians suffer are caused by landmines, suicide attack, explosions and targeted killing, in which 260 civilians got killed or got wounded. Airstrikes were the second major cause of fatalities noncombatants suffer as 68 people were killed or injured in May.
