GHOR (SW) – Civilian casualties in Ghor province surged by 70 per cent in the first five months of this year in comparison to the past year.

According to the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission officials here, at least 48 civilians got killed and 32 others got wounded in blasts and Taliban attacks here during the first five months of this year. In the same period last year 11 civilians were killed and 23 others wounded.

Fareeda Nasiri, interim head of the AIHRC in Ghor, said this represents 70 per cent increase in civilian casualties.

Abdul Hai Khatibi, spokesman for the provincial governor, described this situation worrisome. He blamed the Taliban for placing roadside landmines and using civilians as human shield during clashes with the security forces. He added the Taliban have even killed farmers here.

This comes as a father got killed along with his two sons while his wife got injured in a roadside IED blast in Feroz Koh city here. Wife of this man, Shumail, the only survivor of this incident, told Salam Watandar that the blast ripped through their car in the evening.

Sitting by her side in the public hospital, her mother said this incident has devastated the life of her daughter.

The local officials and the AIHRC blame the Taliban for causing havoc in the lives of civilians with such attacks.

The Taliban have not commented in this regard.
