KABUL(SW):Afghanistan’s Under-19 football team has lost the chance to compete in the World Cup following back to back defeats in the qualifying rounds.
The latest defeat came Sunday night when the Afghan squad lost to Palestine 0-2. None of the teams could score in the first half as both sides showcased good fight. Palestine managed to score its first goal in the 50th minute of the game in the second half. It was followed by another one in the 90th minute that sealed the victory for them.
In the Asian qualifiers for the Under-19 World Cup, Afghanistan lost its first match to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 0-3. In its group, Afghanistan now stands at 3rd slot ahead of India. The Afghan squad would take on India tomorrow.
So far, Afghanistan has received 5 goals and has failed to score any. India on the other end has also failed to score any but has sustained 8 goals in the two games it has played. It is worth mentioning that Afghanistan’s U-19 played its first international match in 2009 and has lost all nine games it has played so far.
All in all, 40 Asian countries divided in ten groups are competing for the U-19 World Cup. Only 20 of them would qualify for the second rounds of the qualifiers.
