SHEBERGHAN (SW) – The Taliban insurgents have imposed new tax on thousands of residents of Mangjek district in Jawzjan province.
A number of Jawzjan residents told Salam Watandar the insurgents have warned to expel those not paying AFN 50 to them every month. They said the Taliban have erected multiple check posts in the district to inspect those travelling on the main roads.
The Mangjek residents said the government has so far failed to free them from the raging brutalities of the Taliban here.
When contacted, Matiullah Ehsan, district governor, told SW that the insurgents are collecting up to AFN 600,000 from at least 12,000 households here. Officials added the insurgents are using these funds to fuel insurgency in the area.
However, the Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahed, has rejected reports about collecting tax from the Mangjek residents in Jawzjan province.
