TALUQAN (SW): A canal constructed in Takhar province with funds worth AFN 56 million has collapsed within months of construction.
Residents of the Namak Aab district informed sand and silt were used in the edges of this canal, which led to its destruction. This has led to mixing of sweat water with the salty water, which is hampering agriculture in the area.
A number of locals and elders gathered at the provincial governor’s office on Sunday demanding reconstruction of the canal. They warned to block the salt mining in the area if the canal is not reconstructed.
Salim Akbar, head of water supply affairs in the province, informed Salam Watandar this canal was constructed in the Namak Aab on experimental basis, which proved to be a failure. A fact-finding mission has also been formed to look into the matter. The provincial administration vows to reconstruct it soon.
