KABUL (SW): Following Friday’s brazen attack on the 209-Shaheen Corps in Balkh, civil society activists and political analysts have called for stern actions against the Taliban and their sympathizers including former president Hamid Karzai.
Sami Darayie, a civil society activist, has urged the government to deprive Karzai of all perks and privileges, and even initiate legal action against him in this regard. He also blamed Karzai for freeing a number of Taliban militants from prisons during his term in office. Asif Hamraaz, another civil society activist, asserted that the sympathizers of the Taliban are actually worse than the Taliban.
Political analyst Asif Ashna believes those making pro-Taliban remarks are actually eying to score political points, and are least bothered about the ground realities. He viewed such politicians exploiting the terror caused by the militants for their own political benefits.
Meanwhile, former president Hamid Karzai on Sunday clarified that he pronounced the Taliban as ‘brothers’ for the sake of peaceful resolution of the conflict. Karzai told a press conference in Kabul that he would no longer call the Taliban as brothers. In an interview with a foreign broadcaster last week, Karzai said the Taliban have control over vast area, and should be recognized as a political force.
