Baghlan University or a military base?

02/04/2017

PUL-I-KHUMRI (SW): The Baghlan University students want their faculties to be moved back to the Pul-i-Khmri city or other safe parts of the province so that the security forces stop using them as a military base.

In conversation with Salam Watandar, a number of students said the ragging violence has severely affected their studies. Since some years, the faculties of journalism, engineering, economics, arts and social sciences of the university have been moved Hassan Khail area of the province on the main Baghlan-Kunduz highway. This part of the province remains on the Taliban’s hit list, which means disruption in studies for the students.

Aziz Mubarez and Frozan Yaqoobi, two Baghlan University students, said the students are constantly hearing the sounds of gunfire and shelling. “The campus was used as a military base by the government, its windows got broken, this has turned into a frontline in the war”, Mubarez said.

Samiullah Wafa, a professor at the BU, agreed that the situation is not ideal here for studies. He informed that a number of female students who managed to make it to the university eventually abandoned their studies due to insecurity. Khalil Ahmad Kanjo, chancellor of the university, acknowledged that some security forces are present on the campus. He, however, said the central government has been informed about the issue.

Meanwhile, Ikramuddin Saree, security chief of the province, has vowed that all measures are put in place to ensure peace in the province.
