‘Aspects of peace process should be thoroughly studied’

KABUL (SW) – Former president Hamid Karzai on Thursday stressed all aspects of the peace process should be thoroughly studied.

Addressing a conference on peace in Kabul, the former president said Afghans do not want to face uncertainty or another form of feudalism following the peace drive. He added people in Afghanistan need to deliberate upon all aspects of peace among them as well as with the international partners. Karzai warned if this is not done, only the Afghans would be blamed for the repeat of the disastrous experiment.

On his term, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said the Taliban should forget about grabbing power via force after the withdrawal of foreign troops. He said this group should attract people to their ranks only through legitimate political activities. He said peace is not possible if one party continues to kill Afghans on the directives of a number of foreign countries.

Head of the civil society network, Azizur rehman Rafi, told the gathering that if elections are not held, Afghanistan would face a serious crisis of legitimacy. He warned it would be difficult to come out of that crisis.

This comes preparations are in full swing for the presidential polls as the U.S. and Taliban continue their sixth round of talks for peace in Afghanistan.
