23/11/2016

KABUL (SW): A report prepared by the International Campaign to Ban Landmines Center, suggests that Afghanistan is sustaining the largest number of landmine victims throughout the world.

The report indicates that out of the total 6,461 landmine causalities throughout the world, Afghanistan has sustained 1,310 landmine causalities per the year 2016.

Salam Mohammadi, the director for Afghanistan Landmine Victims Association, said on Wednesday in Kabul that landmines, including anti-personnel and cluster mines, have claimed 532 lives and wounded 778 more individuals in 2015.

Mohammadi complained that the government and other international organization have not paid attention to landmine victims in the country. He stated that as much as 35.4 kilometers of land has been demined during the last year but there are still concerns over increase in the use of hand-made landmines that claim civilians’ lives.

The 2016 report showed a significant decline of $77 million in international support for de-mining efforts. Last year was the third year in a row of declining support and lowest level of aid for this sector since 2005.
