‘50% of police in Kandahar, Zabul, Helmand, Uruzgan used drugs’

KABUL (SW) – The US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) has said in a report that 50% of police in Kandahar, Zabul, Helmand & Uruzgan provinces used drugs.

In its quarterly report for the first half of 2020, SIGAR said General Directorate for Internal Security, partnering with National Directorate of Security found that some 50% to 70% of police positions were “ghost soldiers” in these provinces.

When contacted, spokesman for the interior ministry Tariq Arian said these specific points are under investigation.

Meanwhile, the SIGAR report has further noted that General Directorate for Internal Security arrested approx. 1,025 police & government officials over the past year as part of its countercorruption, counter-insider threat, and counterespionage efforts.

It added by By March 2020, Ministry of Interior reported it executed 171 warrants and had 84 outstanding. Of 171 executed warrants, Afghan authorities immediately released all but four defendants.
