KABUL (SW)) – The defense ministry on Sunday confirmed two U.S. service members and an Afghan soldier got killed in Nangarhar late last evening.
The defense ministry said an individual opened fire on Afghan National Army members and US forces in Sherzad district last night as a result, ‘one brave ANA member was martyred and three brave members injured, and two brave Resolute Support (NATO-led mission) members (U.S. service members) lost their lives and six brave members were injured”, it said.
A high level delegation led by the Chief of Army Staff Gen. Bismillah Waziri is investigating the incident together with the U.S team in Nangarhar province, it added. “Incidents such as this fail to have negative effects on the friendship and spirit of cooperation and between the ANDSF and U.S Military forces. We will continue our fight against terrorism together”, said the defense ministry.
Col. Sonny Leggett, spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, confirmed the incident in a statement last evening. "A combined U.S. and Afghan force conducting an operation in Nangarhar province was engaged by direct fire on Feb. 8," he said, adding casualties were suffered in the attack.
