KABUL (SW): Afghan athletes have bring home a total of six medals including three gold after a successful tour of Malaysia for the International Muaythai competitions.
According to the Afghanistan Muaythai Federation, the event was hosted by South Korea. Sohrab Ahmadi, Sher Hussain Azimi and Humayoun Rezay won gold medals. Sohrab was the first Afghan to overpower his opponent from Thailand to make it to the final, and defeated host Malaysia to grab the gold. Sher Hussain Azimi followed with another gold by first defeating his opponent from New Zealand and later host South Korean athlete to earn the gold. The third gold was secured by Humayoun Rezay by defeating host country’s athlete in the final.
Muay Thai or Thai boxing is a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques.
A total of six Afghan athletes, including two females, participated in this international event held in South Korea. Kawsar Shahzad and Shukria Bahmani from Afghanistan lost their matches against their opponents from South Korea and Thailand respectively and settled for bronze medals. The silver for Afghanistan was earned by Mustafa Hassanzada who lost the match for gold against his opponent from Thailand after defeating opponent from Mangolia.
These six medals are an exceptional achievement for the national Muathai team who earned the pride of hoisting the Afghan flag and national anthem in the distant land of South Korea.
