17,000 patients struggling with diabetes in Herat

HERAT (SW) – At least 17,000 patients are struggling with diabetes in Herat province alone, officials said in connection with the World Diabetes Day here on Thursday.

The day was marked with a walk in Herat city to spread awareness.

Ahmad Zia Mohtasebzada, head of the diabetes awareness program at the health directorate, said on the occasion that the number of diabetes patients is on the rise here. He called for balanced diet and regular exercise to overcome this serious health issue. A daily walk for at least 30 minutes is a must, he stressed.

Regional head of the doctors’ association, Shamsul Haq Saleem, said on the occasion that the recent changes in lifestyle have increased the risks of getting ill with diabetes in Afghanistan.

A number of diabetes patients on this occasion spoke about the benefits of balanced diet and physical activity in the face of this grim health issue. An estimated 425 million people across the globe are struggling with diabetes, and this figure is likely to reach close to one billion by 2035.
