NILI (SW) – The fake sense of racial superiority in Daikundi province has claimed the life of a young woman after tragic end to a love affair.

It all began when a young man Nasrullah and a young woman Bibi Shah, also known as Fatema, fell in love after initial contacts on mobile phone. Later, the two also managed to meet in person prompting Nasrullah to request her mother to ask Fatema’s hand in marriage from her parents.

Abdul Razaq Karimi, father of Nasrullah, told Salam Watandar he together with his wife went to meet Fatema’s parents multiple times. He said these efforts yield no result. Karimi said this compelled him to gather local elders and request for Fatema’s hand in marriage once again for his son.

This time, according to him, the girl’s mother told the boy’s mother “You are Hazara and we are Sadat, our daughter is ‘Bibi’, and it is not right that she is in your service”. Even after this, Nasrullah’s parents never gave-up.

But, the young man and woman get sick of this situation, and tried to commit suicide. Karimi said the girl lost her life while the boy was saved by doctors.

Head of the directorate of women affairs, Zakia Rezaey, told Salam Watandar the young woman was head of a local school in the provincial capital Nili. She lamented the fake sense of racial superiority resulted in this tragic end of their love story.

Local civil society activists, Yahya Erfan, said this social phenomenon has made many young people sacrifice their love.

This comes days after Valentine’s Day was celebrated in some parts of Afghanistan. Religious leaders in Herat province opposed these celebrations as ‘Haraam’.
