KANDAHAR CITY (SW): A well-placed security source informed Salam Watandar that the Taliban militants have overrun Maruf district in Kandahar province.
The source, who wished not to be named since he was not authorized to speak to the media, said the district was under attack for the past two days. It said a number of policemen have lost lives, some have managed to flee while many more have been taken away by the Taliban.
Meanwhile, Kandahar police chief Gen. Abdul Raziq has discarded these reports. He said only four policemen got killed in these clashes, but fresh air and ground support has reached the area. He said many Taliban militants have been killed in air raids.
Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, spokesman for the Taliban, has stated in a message that they have overrun two security check posts in Maruf killing more than 10 policemen besides taking 15 policemen as hostages.
The Taliban orchestrated a suicide car bombing in Maruf two weeks ago.
