KABUL (SW): Former President Hamid Karzai lashed out at the U.S. for its new war strategy in Afghanistan saying he does not want the country turned into battle ground for powerful and regional countries.
Urging upon the need for constituting a Loya Jirga (grand council) to develop national consensus in defiance to the new U.S. war strategy, Karzai also urged the National Unity Government (NUG) to oppose it. Recalling his tenure, the former president said he always resisted foreign pressure to protect national interests, and cooperated with the international community for the welfare of Afghanistan.
Karzai suggested the NUG to pursue a two-prong policy of developing national consensus on key issues and cooperate with the U.S. and allies on matters of mutual interest. He assured the government his support in this regard.
On peace talks, the former president said he has written a letter to the Taliban to shun violence in a bid to end differences and ensure exit of the foreign forces. He stressed the U.S. should play its role in ensuring peace prevails. Karzai said outsiders are aiming to sow the seeds of hatred among the Afghans that needs to be tackled wisely and with unity.
