KANDAHAR CITY (SW): With the financial support of the USAID, the power generation capacity of the Kajaki Dam in southern Kandahar province would soon be lifted to 51 megawatts.
Officials at the De Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS), said on Tuesday that the third turbine would be installed at the Kajaki Dam in months’ time. They said that this move would provide electricity to 19,000 more families in Kandahar and Helmand.
Qudratullah Dilawari, Head of DABS, told journalists on Tuesday that besides the installment of the third turbine, the two existing turbines at the dam would also be repaired. He regretted that due to insecurity, the installation of the third turbine was delayed.
Dilawari added that in a number of areas under the Taliban’s control, the militants extort the money from the locals. He mentioned that the militants have developed their own tariff collection system, and collect the money for their terrorist activities.
The Director for USAID’s infrastructure programs said on the occasion that they have so far funded $ 800 million for the energy sector in Afghanistan since 2013. The USAID official expressed resolve to continue to support the energy sector.
Kajaki Dam is one of Afghanistan’s biggest power generating reservoirs.
