PUL-I-KHUMRI (SW): Officials at the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation (MTCA) have said that an airport would be built in Pul-e-Khumri City in northern Baghlan province.
Mohammadullah Batash, the minister for MTCA left Kabul for Baghlan on Wednesday. The minister told a press conference in the provincial capital that this airport would benefit several Northern provinces.
In the meantime, Abdul Satar Barez, the governor in Baghlan province, said that the airport is planned to be built at the Khaja Alwan area in the province. He added that this is an estimated $200 million project, which would be funded by the World Bank. The minister said that Balghan is a transit province hence the airport is deemed necessary there.
He further said that apart from building an airport, the government would also build eight terminals to facilitate passengers and trade.
The governor assured that the provincial government would do its best to ensure the security for the project. Barez said that this project would create a number of jobs for the residents in Baghlan.
For the very first time in the late 1970s, former President Sardar Dawood Khan initiated building an airport in Khawja Alwan area in Pul-e-Khomri. The construction continued through former President Najeebullah’s era but war and insecurity stopped it from being completed.
