KABUL (SW): In the wake of mounting problems faced by the Afghan refugees in Pakistan, analysts underline the need for lasting solution to this chronic issue.
This comes at a time when the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has declined extending the stay of Afghan immigrants there. Pakistan’ federal government is yet to decide on this matter.
Mohammad Ishaq Atmar, an analyst told Salam Watandar that Pakistan is pressurizing the Afghan refugees in violation of all international norms. He suggested that the Afghan government should consult with the UNHCR about this issue. Atmar said that this issue needed a lasting solution.
Officials at the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriates have been asking Pakistan to extend the stay of Afghan refugees for at least two more years. Abdul Hafeez Miakhail, spokesman for this ministry told Salam Watandar that there is a chance that the two governments would reach an understanding in this regard.
UNHCR officials in Kabul also stress that considering the state of security in Afghanistan; Pakistan should extend the stay of Afghan refugees. Nader Farhad, UNHCR spokesman told Salam Watandar that it is hoped that the government of Pakistan would extend the stay of the refugees.
There are reportedly some three million Afghan refugees living in Pakistan. Lately, hundreds of them have been rounded-up by Pakistani forces and sent back to Afghanistan.
