Women prisoners go on strike in Nimroz

09/04/2016

ZARANJ (SW): Women inmates in south western Nimroz province have gone on strike against the alleged manhandling by the jail officials there.

Bibi Nigar, a women prisoner told Salam Watandar that security personnel inside the main prison in province have been beating and abusing them for quite a while now. As per her information, there are 11 women and three children imprisoned.

Though, Bibi Nigar acknowledged that she has been sentenced to prison by a court for conspiring to murder her late husband, but the jail authorities abuse them beyond the laws. She told Salam Watandar on telephone that a number of women prisoners have been sexually abused inside the prison.

“We have been beaten-up by the jail authorities, they verbally abuse us. We can do nothing against all this other than committing suicide”, she said.

Gen. Esmatullah Dawlatzai, commander of the 505-Zone, said in this regard that they have not received any such complain against the jail authorities. He went on to say that the prisons are subject to constant monitoring and evaluation.

Dawlatzai went on to say that those women prisoners having complaints should approach the provincial attorney’s office. “I see this as an allegation against the police, if they have proof they should approach the attorney’s office”, he noted.
