KABUL (SW): The Paghman district in Kabul is among the favorite destinations for picnickers in the country thanks to its scenic beauty, clean and fresh air.

However, throwing away of litter and garbage by the visitors has been spoiling the beauty of this valley. To tackle this issue, the local community gathered to streamline the process of garbage collection in Paghman from now on. In a recent sitting, the locals in collaboration with the association for support and growth of children decided to handle this as a social problem.

This led to development of proper concrete waist bins on different spots frequented by visitors on holidays and other special occasions. The move has been hailed by the local population.

Shujauddin, a resident of Paghman, said this joint effort of the association for support and growth of children and the local population, has promoted a sense of responsibility in the area, eventually leading to cleaner and more beautiful resort for the countrymen.

Ahmadullah Hakimi, representative of the Zargar valley and Hakim Qala neighborhoods, said the spread of garbage and litter was causing illnesses among children in the whole district. He said in the absence of garbage-bins, people were throwing away waste on the streets that was spoiling the beauty of Paghman and giving away a negative impression of its inhabitants.

Safiur Rehman, another resident of the Zargar valley, highlighted the locals are very content with this small step of providing proper waste bins.

Member of the district council, Mir Bahauddin, informed the waste bins are placed in line with a proper plan to systematically collect the garbage in a sustainable way. He said the Paghman Municipality designed these bins, and are now available for all those visiting Paghman for picnic.

Underlining the shortcomings still existing in municipal affairs, he said the local population acknowledged its responsibility towards keeping their neighborhood clean. Mir Bahauddin hailed the peoples’ financial contributions towards the execution of this project of placing proper waste bins in the whole district.

Nelofar Ahmadzai, representative of the association for support and growth of children, said in this regard that the pilot project has been launched in Farasha, Zargar Valley and Pashta areas. She expressed optimism this move would be handy in keeping rubbish off the streets.

The government has also expressed its commitments towards the environment with the ‘Kabul Green Belt’ project that also covers Paghman district.
