KABUL (SW): Latest findings of the Democracy International (DI) has revealed that an overwhelming majority of the parliamentarians are in the support of electoral reforms.
Out of 215 parliamentarians who were interviewed on the electoral reforms, 92 percent have advocated in favor of the electoral reforms.
Sayed Akhtar, representing DI told journalists here on Thursday that the MPs have prioritized election issues as follows; electoral system reform (92 percent), parliamentary elections (74 percent), provincial council elections (79 percent) and holding the Loya Jirga (87 percent).
Zakria Barekzai, acting head of the DI, underlined weak governance, regional politics and insecurity as major obstacles. He said that in 2014, 48 percent of MPs believed that the government was heading in the right direction but the recent survey suggests that that percent has reduced by 7 percent now.
Based on this survey, 26 percent of MPs believed weak governance was the biggest challenge faced by the country while 25 percent of the lawmakers noted interference of neighboring countries and 21 percent blamed persistent insecurity for it.
An overwhelming majority of the parliamentarians pointed out that the state of security has become worse. The survey suggested that the law makers are divided on the Presidential Decree on electoral reforms. It is worth noticing that both upper house and the lower house have rejected the decree.
