LASHKARGAH (SW): Latest fighting in southern Helmand province has forced thousands of more people to abandon their homes in the restive areas and move to the provincial capital.

Ghulam Farooq Noorzai, provincial head of Refugees and Repatriates told Salam Watandar that they have registered some 2000 internally displaced families who have arrived in Helmand escaping bloody conflicts in their native areas. He informed that efforts are underway to register these displaced families and arrange assistance for them.

“Our survey is underway, we have so far registered more than 2000 families so far”, he informed. Depressed over the state of affairs in their native areas, the displaced people also expressed annoyance over the lack of assistance provided to them in Lashkargah.

Janan and Nashtar are two heads of two different families who left the restive Marja district due to armed conflict between the government forces and the militants. Janan said he has no ration available for his family as they left their homes in a rush due to the fighting. Nashtar said they just want peace in their native areas and would happily move back there.

Ahmad Wali, regional head of the International Committee of Red Crescent told Salam Watandar that they aim to address the needs of all the displaced families. He added one hundred families have been provided with essential supplies on Thursday.

According to estimates, some 20, 000 families have been displaced by the raging conflict in Helmand during the past 12 years.
